A Conversation with Textile Designer Mark Pollack

I always look forward to seeing new textile introductions from Pollack. I know that with each collection, there is enough sensory content in their textiles to appease both my eyes and my fingertips; every new batch of samples will inspire solutions for virtually any project which I am currently assisting designers. I never get the feeling I am compromising either performance or beauty when I suggest using Pollack fabrics. “Compromise has such a pejorative connotation,” said Mark Pollack, when I recently spoke with him in his office. Mr. Pollack is the namesake and design director of Pollack. “I would say that it is not so much a compromise as it is finding a solution. Design is all about finding solutions and solving problems.” Indeed, it is the inherent balance of critical elements within Mr. Pollack’s textiles that make his design solutions so easy to work with.

The company was founded in 1988, after Mr. Pollack completed an eleven year stint as associate design director with Jack Lenor Larsen. From its inception, Pollack has been a joint effort between Mark Pollack, Rick Sullivan as Pollack’s chief executive officer, and Susan Sullivan taking the important role of sales and marketing director. The contribution of all three individuals, among others, continues to be vital to the success of the company. Known right from the beginning for their contract textile’s innovative materials and techniques, Pollack fabrics have a refined and nuanced color sense that carries an inherent depth and complexity which invites interaction. I asked Mr. Pollack to shed some light on his approach to designing textiles.

“Every fabric is different and there is no one way to design a textile,” he said, “The starting point could be, as most people believe, a pattern.” Unlike interior designers, a textile designer is typically their own client, at least in the first phase of the life of the fabric.
